The schism between the Black and the Green councils now appears absolutely irreparable. Flying the Black flag for Rhaenyra’s claim (Emma D’Arcy) on the Iron Throne is her husband-uncle Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), and their Velaryon brothers-in-arms, including the seafaring Lord Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint).
And on Team Green? The illegitimate King Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), his mother, Dowager Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), and the sociopathic Prince Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), whose hulking dragon Vhagar shattered any hope of a peaceful reconciliation when it impetuously devoured Rhaenyra’s young son, Lucerys.
As the succession question splinters the kingdom, its futility was demonstrated when House Bracken and Blackwood drew their swords in an off-screen battle that ended in mutual annihilation. And although Daemon and Cole raced to secure strategic positions – Daemon’s arrival at Harrenhal castle on Caraxes ensured its inhabitants’ fealty to the Blacks – Rhaenyra still hoped all-out war could be avoided.
Yet, having snuck into King’s Landing disguised as a Septa and gaining a private audience with Alicent Hightower, her risky attempt at reconciliation didn't go as planned. Both came to realize the truth: that even unto his death, Viserys wanted Rhaenyra to succeed him.
