The final countdown is on ahead of the 2024 college football season as fans eagerly await the unique game day experience inside historic stadiums across the country. Not all stadiums are equal in size with some of the largest capacity venues creating a distinct home-field advantage. A sellout crowd can be a great equalizer in college football with an intimidating environment for visiting opponents. The updated list of the 25 largest capacity stadiums for the 2024 season was recently revealed, setting the record straight for which program has the grandest stage in the nation.

The SEC leads all conferences with11 home stadiums in the top 25 list, while the Big Ten has 10including each of the three largest for total capacity. This dominance by the SEC and Big Ten not only underscores their influence in the sport, but also highlights the intense atmosphere that fans can expect at these colossal venues.

Many of thesevenues are also expected to be the site of college football's loudest games in 2024.

25. Temple — Lincoln Financial Field (68,532)

Temple is aided by the fact that it shares an NFL stadium with the Philadelphia Eagles. Unfortunately the Owls averaged less than 25,000 fans in attendance during the previous five seasons. Renovations completed before the 2019 season at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa lowered the capacity by approximately 1,335 with the addition of more box and outdoor club seating as well as a larger scoreboard on the north end zone. Husky Stadium in Washington underwent a massive overhaul completed in 2013 and another in 2014 that cut the capacity by more than 2,400. However, it is still one of the loudest stadiums in the country given its unique towering stands.

Home of Arkansas football since 1938,Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium was renovated in 2018 with a $160 million upgrade that completely overhauled the north end zone and adjacent Frank Broyles Athletic Center. Michigan Statecelebrated 100 years of Spartan Stadium in 2023. The Spartans own an impressive 386-169-13 (.679) overall home record since1923. The stadium underwent structural improvements in the summer of 2022. Wisconsin has one of the most underrated home atmospheres in college football at Camp Randall Stadium.

The home of Fighting Irish football since it was built in 1930, Notre Dame Stadium is among the most iconic in college football with its storied tradition. It was last expanded in 1997 to its current capacity of 80,795. Notre Dame has woneight of its last nine home games in South Bend. Clemsonhas finished in the top 20 nationally in average home attendance for 43-straight seasons. The Tigers have been highly successful at home under head coach Dabo Swinney with just five losses at Clemson Memorial Stadium since 2011.

When Florida is rolling, The Swamp is one of the toughest environments to play in, in all of college football.On Sept. 3, 2016, the playing surface was renamed in honor of former Florida quarterback and head coach Steve Spurrier.

The Bruins previously played their home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, sharing the venue with cross-town rival USC. During the 2021 season, UCLA used tarps to decrease the overall capacity of The Rose Bowl down to 69,747. The tarps spelled U-C-L-A in the north upper end zone. The Rose Bowl was also used for portions of Olympic Games, multiple World Cups and four Super Bowls. The stadium's record attendance was set in 1973 when106,869 spectators packed in to watch The Rose Bowl between Ohio State and USC for the national championship.

The current hedges were planted in 1996 after the originals were taken out to accommodate thesoccer tournament for the 1996 Summer Olympics. The stadium is named forDr. Steadman Vincent Sanford, an early major force behind Georgia athletics. In 1911, he moved the university's football venue from its first location,Herty Field, to a location at the center of campus which was namedSanford Fieldin his honor. In February 2017, the UGA Athletic Board approved a $63 million expansion to renovate the west side of the stadium.The approved design relocated the locker room from the east side to the west side and added a new plaza and recruiting pavilion.Construction began following the 2017 season and was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 31, 2018, a day before Georgia's first home game of the season.

Before the1937season, permanent seats were built along the east sideline, increasing the capacity to 24,000. Following a number of renovations through the years, an upper deck was added to the west side in1988and raised the seating by nearly 10,000 to 70,123.As part of a big 10-year plan to upgrade the campus sports facilities, the university will spend $92.5 million to improve the stadium. Ohio Stadium is commonly referred to as "The Shoe" given its unique horseshoe shape. Because of that, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in college football. The home of the Buckeyes was built in 1922 andrefurbished in 2001. The south stands used to be portable, but were made permanent aspart of the renovation project. However, the stands remain separated from the pre-existing horseshoe. Ohio State set an attendance record of 110,045 for "The Game" against rival Michigan in 2016. At one point, additional seating raised the capacity to 104,944, but the renovation of luxury suites in 2017 reduced the capacity to its current mark.

The home of Penn State football has undergone numerous expansion and renovation projectsover the years.In 2002, Penn State set an NCAArecord for most fans to ever watch a college football team over the course of a single season at home. Beaver Stadium hosted eight gamesthat year and averaged 107,239 per game totaling what was at the time an NCAA record of 857,911 in total home attendance. The Nittany Lions set a single-game attendance program record of 110,889 in September 2018 when Penn State hosted Big Ten rival Ohio State.

"The Big House" at Michigan was built in 1927 with an original capacity of 72,000 — much smaller than its present day total that ranks highest in all of college football. Excluding the 2020 season impacted by the pandemic, every Wolverines home game inside Michigan Stadium since Nov. 8, 1975 has drawn a crowd of at least 100,000 spectators, an active streak of more than 200 contests. In June 2007, the university's board of regents approved a $226 million renovation and expansion project for Michigan Stadium that included replacement of a portion of bleachers, widening of aisles and individual seats, installing handrails, the addition of a new press box, 83 luxury boxes and 3,200 club seats. Most of the seats inside Michigan Stadium sit below ground level, therefore its size is not apparent from outside the gates.
