Preparing For Grym Boss Fight In Baldur’s Gate 3
How To Use The Grym Hammer In Baldur’s Gate 3
When players manage to reach the Adamantine Forge in Grymforge, they'll need at least one mould and a chunk of mithril ore to start the process. Players will also need to beat what's easily the toughest boss battle in the entire Underdark region of Baldur's Gate 3.
Grym, as Baldur's Gate 3 calls it, is an Adamantine golem that emerges onto the forge once players spin the lava valve. Grym resists or nullifies almost every damage type, and even then that's only when he's superheated from walking through lava. This makes it hard to deal any damage to his 300 hit points, but thankfully there's one environmental damage source Grym is critically weak against.

Updated on April 21, 2024, by Nahda Nabiilah: The Adamantine Forge is one of the many essential areas players need to visit while in the Underdark. The forge can reward a decent weapon or armor in Baldur’s Gate 3 if Tav provides the required materials: the mould and mithril ore. Unfortunately, not everything is as easy as it seems, since the forging process triggers the Grym boss fight, which is a powerful enemy that’s almost immune to every single damage in the game.
Preparing For Grym Boss Fight In Baldur’s Gate 3
There are a few unique features players need to understand about this fight if they want to succeed. First, once players turn the lava valve, the lower parts of the forge flood with magma. The only safe areas are the four circular areas, and the short walkways that emerge from each one, plus the mould chamber and the crucible. Characters can walk into the magma, but they'll take a lot of fire damage each time they do.
Second, Grym is easy to provoke. The golem automatically targets the last creature to successfully attack it, even if the attack does zero damage. It'll walk toward the offending creature, attack if it's close enough, and then use Quake as a bonus action every round.
Players will want to take advantage of this provocation weakness by positioning the party on each of the four circles. The only way to do so is to ungroup the party and position each one individually. In particular, make sure a party member is standing next to the forge lever. Once everyone is in place and all buffs and potions are taken, activate the lava valve.

How To Use The Grym Hammer In Baldur’s Gate 3
Players have two goals in this fight. First, make sure Grym is always wading through the magma and keeping its Superheated condition active. Without Superheated, Grym is immune to all damage. The magma flow shuts off every three rounds or so, so have a character stand next to the valve at all times with an action to spare on turning it.
Second, players must bait Grym into standing on the crucible at the center of the forge. Pulling the forge lever will cause a massive hammer to strike the crucible, and if Grym is in the way (just one leg is enough) it'll take almost half its hit points in damage. Two blows like that and this boss fight is over in no time.
However, players should be aware that four magma mephits will appear on the west side of the forge after the first hammer blow. These mephits don't have much health, but they explode and deal fire damage to adjacent characters when they die.
A handy spell for this fight is Spiritual Weapon. The summoned weapon takes no damage from the magma and can provoke Grym, making it a good tactical spell for baiting Grym into standing on the crucible. If several characters are standing on the inner side of each circle, this will also trick Grym into the center, since it can hit multiple targets with Quake from that location.
Players can also attempt to kill Grym without using the forge hammer. This makes the boss battle much tougher, but it's still possible. One thing that helps is the fact that Grym is vulnerable to bludgeoning damage, which means he takes twice as much as normal. A fighter or barbarian with a large hammer can thus make a real dent in its hit points each round.
However, players should be careful about who attacks and when, because this kind of fight aims to keep Grym in one place where it can keep getting superheated and only attack the front-line characters. Players who pull this off will get a special achievement, "A Grym Fate".
The rewards for this fight include many experience points, the Grymskull Helm (immune to critical hits, resistant to fire damage, access to Hunter's Mark), and as many Adamantine weapons and armor as players can make.
